1. Application

A. What are the criteria for selection to the residency program at STRP?

The residency recruitment and selection committee considers USMLE scores, previous training and experience, your primary interest in primary care internal medicine, and letters of recommendations. Most successful applicants score above 80 in their tests.

B. What documents must I submit in order to apply?

Only applications submitted via ERAS will be reviewed. You must submit a Dean’s letter, three letters of recommendation, medical school transcript, personal statement, curriculum Vitae, and USMLE transcript

C. Does your program require previous training or experience in primary care internal medicine?

No. Previous US clinical training or experience is helpful, though it is not required.

D. What is the application deadline?

The application deadline for STRP is updated annually and is usually toward the end of January. It is desirable to submit your application well in advance of the deadline date so that interviews may be scheduled.

E. Is CSA required for an interview or as an application prerequisite?

No. CSA is not required for interviewing or for application, but must be obtained before ranking.

F. Is ECFMG certification required for interviewing?

No. ECFMG certification is not required for interviewing, but must be obtained before the rank deadline.

G. Is there a policy regarding the number of attempts at USMLE?

No. We have no policy regarding the number of attempts in taking USMLE.

H. Is there a specific cut-off date for graduation?

No. There is no policy on the cut-off date for graduation; however, most people apply within a few years from medical school.

I. How do I Apply?

Applications will be accepted through ERAS only. American Medical Graduates should contact their dean’s office or go to www.aamc.org/eras for other frequently asked questions. International medical graduates can contact ECFMG through their website at www.ecfmg.org/eras/ for further questions

2. Eligibility Requirements

A. Do I need to be licensed by the board of this state to be admitted to the program?

Yes. You must be licensed as a graduate trainee to be admitted to the program.

B. Are Residents required to take step 3 during training?

Yes. They are required to take and pass step 3 by the 3rd quarter of their second year of training.

3. IMG Requirements and FAQs

A. What are the Criteria for IMGs?

IMGs must have completed an ERAS application, have a valid ECFMG certificate, appropriate visa or immigration/citizenship status and USMLE scores of 80 or above.

B. Are there residents from international medical schools currently enrolled in the program?

Yes.

C. What types of visas does your program sponsor?

Non-citizens must be eligible for a J-1 visa, which is sponsored by the ECFMG. Please note that March is very late to apply for an H-1 visa and the H-1 application process is very time-consuming. There is no guarantee we will offer H-1 visa each year.

D. If your program offers an H-1 visa, do I need to pass step III before I can apply for an H-1 Visa?

Yes.

E. Does your program offer an observership program?

No. There is no formal observership program.

4. AOA Internship FAQ

A. Is this program AOA approved?

Yes. Our traditional rotating internship program is approved and accredited by the AOA.

B. Can a DO who has completed an AOA Internship in your program apply for a 2nd year allopathic residency position?

Yes. Interns may continue residency training in our allopathic program and meet the requirements for ABIM certification; or they may continue training in an osteopathic residency program for osteopathic certification.

C. How do I apply for a 1st year position?

We only accept applications through ERAS. You may contact your school for instructions.

D. Can I go through both the allopathic and osteopathic match processes?

Yes. However, should you choose to do both, you will be automatically blocked from the allopathic match if you match at an osteopathic program.

5. General FAQ

A. Can Residents moonlight during their training?

Only approved moonlighting will be allowed for those with appropriate visa/citizenship status. All moonlighting must be in compliance with the duty hours requirements.

B. Is there a brochure with detailed information about your program?

Detailed information about our residency program is available on our web site at www.strpweb.org. We no longer print brochures.

C. How many residents are in the program?

There are seven to eight residents in each year of training.

D. When do you begin interviewing applicants?

We begin interviewing in October and end the last week of January.

E. What is your program’s Board Pass Rate?

Our program has been very successful in preparing our residents for the Boards. We have consistently achieved a high Board Pass Rate. We have repeatedly achieved a three year pass rate of 100%. Also, in the most recent certification examination, our program was one of only three programs in Pennsylvania that achieved a 100% pass rate.

F. What are the program start dates?

Interns usually start orientation the last week of June and begin rotations on July 1st.

G. Are Residents involved in teaching medical students?

Yes. We have 3rd and 4th year medical student rotations and electives. This is a satisfying resident-teaching opportunity where Interns and residents precept these students

H. Do Residents have a voice in decision-making?

Yes. Our program is very responsive to resident needs. Our program director strongly advocates for resident issues. Not only do residents have an opportunity to voice their concerns at our monthly resident rap sessions, they may bring issues to the program director at any point in time.

6. Accreditation

A. Is the residency program accredited?

Yes. Our residency program is fully accredited by the ACGME and the AOA. The last site visit led to a five-year accreditation for our allopathic program and a four-year accreditation for our osteopathic program.

7. Fellowships

A. Have your residents been successful in obtaining fellowships?

Residents who elect to go on to fellowship programs have been successful in obtaining fellowships. Each year our program has had residents go on to fellowships.

8. Research

A. Are residents required to participate in research projects?

Our residents are encouraged to participate in clinical research projects with faculty. STRP hosts a regional research conference each year. Residents are expected to present their projects at this conference
